Here is the shocking true saga of the Irish American mob. In Paddy Whacked, bestselling author and organized crime expert T. J. English brings to life nearly two centuries of Irish American gangsterism, which spawned such unforgettable characters as Mike "King Mike" McDonald, Chicago's subterranean godfather; Big Bill Dwyer, New York's most notorious rumrunner during Prohibition; Mickey Featherstone, troubled Vietnam vet turned Westies gang leader; and James "Whitey" Bulger, the ruthless and untouchable Southie legend. Stretching from the earliest New York and New Orleans street wars through decades of bootlegging scams, union strikes, gang wars, and FBI investigations, Paddy Whacked is a riveting tour de force that restores the Irish American gangster to his rightful preeminent place in our criminal history - and penetrates to the heart of the American experience.

The author, T. J. English, has done a thorough job in telling the story of gangsterdom from the 1850's into the 1980's. Chicago's Lords of the Levee, "Hinky Dink" and "Bathhouse John", and an assortment of shady characters brought on by passage of the 18th Amendment in both Chicago and New York none of whom trusted one another make up a colorful but infamous history. Of special interest to me is the telling of how Joseph Kennedy persuaded several mob members to back his son John for president even though so many of them had come to despise brother Robert due to his badgering of mob members. Sam Giancana, who Robert Kennedy chided by saying, "I thought only little girls giggled, Mr. Giancana?" was convinced to support John for president only to find that the much despised Robert was then named attorney general. The mob felt they had been doublecrossed and now they had to "cut off the head, not the tail", John, not Robert. Robert always felt responsible for his brother's assassination due to his relentless pressure on the mob. Also of special interest is the section on Frank Sheeran who tells his story of his assassination of his "best friend" Jimmy Hoffa. This is told in part from the book entitled "I Heard You Paint Houses?" Sheeran was along for the ride to keep Hoffa at ease since he felt safe knowing Sheeran was along. Hoffa failed to realize when the time for one's demise came your best friend was very likely to be involved. Sheeran justified the action by saying if he hadn't taken part Sheeran himself would be hit. There were a couple of chapters I glanced over, but the infamous history that is the mob is certainly made up of a number of diverse and pitiful characters. Even if you've read stories of many of these individuals it is interesting to see what another author has to say about them.
This book is great. 20O years of page turning history. You got NYC, Chicago and New Orleans. You got Boardwalk Empire, Goodfellas, the Westies, Black Mass and Kill The Irishman! There's so much bloodstained history you could fill a keg. Super entertaining and informative, even educational. Learn about the dirty roots of the Kennedy clan. Find out who killed the Kennedy's. Find out who killed Hoffa. Find out about the dark side of organized labor, and the patriotic nation building of the mob. It's all here, and then some.
This is one of those rare books that totally engrosses the reader. It's one heck of a history lesson covering decades, various cities, the hardships of early Irish immigrants and the numerous Irishmen that climbed to the top of the Irish mafia. Quite an eye opener. Very well researched and just as well written.
Written in faultless journalistic style. Excellent research, an engaging and interesting read. TJ English interweaves the history of the Irish underground in America with the history of America itself with no whitewash and no prisoners taken. From Five Points to Southie- Note, the book was published before the capture of Whitey Bulger, but covers him thoroughly. A valuable read.
I knew Owney Madden, I worked near the casino he hung out in and he would always speak to me. I purchased the book to read about Killer Madden. You would never know he had killed that many men. Nice man, always dressed to the nines.Great book, well written and very interesting read. Lots of insight into the world of the Irish Mob.
Initially, I bought this book simply as one in a long list of research books on the subject of organized crime. Unexpectedly, it found a place on a new list: my favorite books ever. I love true-crime books, especially about organized crime, but there are few I've felt compelled to read twice and buy more than one copy of--and I did with this one. Why? Because this is also a book about what makes America tick--the good, the bad and the ugly.In telling the long, sordid tale of the Irish in America, it helps us understand the role of crime in immigrant classes and the function those classes serve within the greater whole of American society. Organized Crime itself seems to be a stepping stone toward integration and establishment in America, a concept I never considered before reading this book but can now see happening, even today among other other groups.
Great job by the author depicting the rise and the subsequent fall of the Irish mobsters from the nineteenth century to the present. Anyone history buff with a trace of Irish in them, or like me, Irish by choice, will enjoy this book.
My great-great uncle was an Irish immigrant, Civil War veteran & an 'Irish' mayor - a contemporary of 'Honey Fitz' Fitzgerald. Very proud, dignified, well-dressed, and profoundly interested in everything & everyone. On the 'take' - for sure. But they spread the wealth around and truly cared about people. The vote got us the power, the politics, the jobs and then up the ladder. It's astonishing to realize that once upon a time, a Catholic couldn't get elected to anything nationally. Now, I think 7/12 Supreme Court justices are Catholic & every politician wants the 'Catholic' vote & a president went to a Pope's funeral. Go figure. I enjoyed the book - but I'm glad the Irish gangs are gone. Hopefully, Whitey Bulger will stay in jail (he has a way of slithering out of things.) The Irish were pushed out by the Italians, who are now being pushed out by the Mexican and/or Russian gangs. There's always a bigger bully around the corner.
