The book gets' sidetracked too far into the intricacies of Death and the Afterlife. About 200 pages would best have been left on the cutting room floor.
Potentially a good book. Way too much exposition and long discourses which drags the plot. In the end, very little moves in the way of plot. Julius doesn't make as many strides in this novel because he isn't called to but the Chelsie storyline is great. Eager to read the last book. Just hoping Rachel doesn't have the characters talk us to death.
When reading a book with various PoVs you run the risk of loving one and hating another which leaves you with this dichotomous feeling about the book you’ve just read.I loved Julius’s PoV and meeting the Chinese Dragons. His mother Bethesda is still awful but at least he has a new ally in Fredrick. He needs another friend especially if he is being maneuvered by the ever seeing Bob. With friends like Bob who needs enemies.*** He might run you over a few times to get there, but Bob’s endgame is always worth playing. Trust me, he’s a good kid.†***Finally we get a little more of Chelsea and the F-clutches backstory along with meeting the great Luck Dragon of China. Everything in this plot arc and PoV was extremely interesting to me.I was still waiting for Julius and Marci to find their way back to each other and at least I’m happy to inform you that it does happen in this book, I just won’t say when you’ll have to read it to see.Marci’s PoV has such promise. I mean she is technically dead and on the other side of all the magic of the world trying to find her way back. She even has a little friend that has tagged along, well besides Ghost. But sometimes this PoV became a huge lecture on magic and how it works. I’m a show me kind of girl, not tell me all about it so I got a little bored for a large section of this. Still once Marci had a lot of it figured out and was trying to figure out how exactly to get back to the land of the living I was all in.This book had more…More magic, more dragons (even a baby one), more twists, more mortal spirits and more BOB to it. Plus you know the end of the world is coming so the next book should be epic.
This series has quickly become my favorite dragon-based fiction and, as someone who loves dragons to pieces, that's some high praise. The characters are dimensional and fun, the plot is complex but not too complicated and is constantly surprising me, and the pacing is perfect to keep me turning the (digitally synthesized) pages. Plus — cherry on top — the dry wit and sassy characters fit exactly into my sense of humor. I cannot praise these books enough, and the wait for book five is going to be a long and painful one.Since this review is technically for the fourth book and not the series as a whole, I'll also add that A Dragon of a Different Color was an amazing addition to the series. I'll admit that I was slightly wary in the beginning, as I sometimes have a harder time getting through books where the two main characters are separated for a long period of time, but my concern was entirely unfounded. None of the characters in this series are boring, and the pacing was perfect to keep me hooked even through the consistent plot jumps between the main characters. Many rounds of applause to Rachel Aaron for her adept skill at this, especially since I've read so many books where this sort of plot device falls flat.Since I'm having trouble containing my love for these books right now, I'm going to say it again: I love this series!
5.5 stars!I read this book the moment I finished [book:No Good Dragon Goes Unpunished|26116636], and it turned out absolutely delightful. I really love adorable, painful love stories with earned HEAs. This book had two, both were incredibly touching and honey-like sweet. Julius continues to be brilliant; and so does Marci in this one. I think when Bethesda will get over her spoiled princes offences, she will eventually realize Julius is the most draconic of her children. I think I would have like to read some sequel set in distant future featuring mature charismatic old dragon which Julius will become one day, alongside with Marci the most powerful Merlin mage…Anyway, I adored Julius/Chelsie parts, but I liked Marci side of the story too. The magic system Rachel Aaron developed is amazing and undeniably unique.I love how deep and dimensional all the side characters in the book. They make the story so vibrant and colorful. The author brilliantly deals with grey shades of human/dragon personalities. The end show-down left me craving the next book, which I just can’t wait to get. I hope it will be less than year…
